Islamorada or Village of Islands is a collection of islands that stretch about 20 miles, and, at some points, is just 150 feet wide. It was named by Spanish explorers who fell in love with the purple sky at sunset and named it “Isla Morado” = purple island. It is also the sport fishing capital of the world.

Islamorada is located along the Overseas Highway, a 113-mile highway that extends through the Florida Keys. Parts of the highway were built in place of the historic Overseas Railroad, and the famous stretch of road is known worldwide for its stunning views of crystal-clear water and exotic wildlife. Stretching from Miami to Key West, the Overseas Highway is the only mode of ground transportation through the Keys with the drive lasting approximately 4 hours.

Geography

Islamorada is located in the Florida Keys and comprises five islands known as The Upper Keys: Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key, and Plantation Key. Islamorada is approximately 1.5 hours driving time south of Miami and approximately 2 hours driving time northeast of Key West.

Neighborhoods

Lower Matecumbe Beach is a neighborhood located on the southwestern half of Lower Matecumbe Key. It is close to a variety of dining, shopping, sporting, and leisure locations.
Windley Key is home to a marine mammal park, a Florida State Park Service geological site, and popular resorts.
Plantation Key Colony is located on the bay side of the island at Mile Marker 90, with shopping, restaurants, and a variety of inland and waterfront real estate with spectacular gulf views.

Annie’s Beach

This beach is a naturally sandy-free beach located at Lower Matecumbe Key, Florida. It is dedicated to local environmentalist Anne Eaton and features a shallow swimming area, covered picnic tables, boardwalk, and bathroom facilities.

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park

Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park features a geological unit known as the Key Largo Limestone and offers a rare opportunity for visitors to compare the living corals of today with their fossilized ancestors.

The Village of Islands Founders Park

The Village of Islands Founders Park is a 45-acre park offering a swimming pool, splash pad, sports facilities, playgrounds & ocean access.

Climate

The best time to visit is between March and May when the weather is warm and mostly clear. The rainiest months are July, August, and September, and hurricane season peaks in August and September. Generally, summers are long, hot, intense, wet, and mostly cloudy and the winters are short, comfortable, humid, windy, and mostly clear. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 64°F to 90°F.
