New Canal Lighthouse Visitors Guide
The New Canal Lighthouse was reconstructed after suffering intense damage from Hurricanes Rita and Katrina in 2005. At the lighthouse, learn interesting facts about critical coast issues, the history of the lighthouse, and habitats of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin. The New Canal Lighthouse aids in navigation by providing lighting to the lighthouse beacon nightly for all to see. Get hands-on experience at testing water quality in the Lake Front Learning Lab.
You can access the museum by two sets of stairs or by an elevator lift for individuals who have special needs. Once you get to the balcony, you’ll see all-encompassing views of the New Orleans South Shore Lakefront. The museum contains three display areas with one showcasing the lighthouse and the region, another display showcases LPBF’s Save our Lake Campaign, and the third display showcases the challenges that were confronted with the LPBF’s Save our Coast Campaign. On the second floor, you’ll see an office space that consists of LPBF’s outreach, education, and development departments.
